People (mostly my meddling aunties) are always asking me why I’m not "with" someone. I never really know how to explain why, but I had an epiphany this morning. The perfect answer can be found in the game Perfection. You know the one with the timer and all the little plastic shapes?
When playing Perfection, everyone always puts the easiest pieces in first. These pieces were often the biggest pieces and those without a lot of edges (circle, square, triangle). You could usually put more than one piece in these slots: smaller, edgier pieces like a star could fit in the large, round circle space. As time ticked on, you would work in the smaller, more angular pieces. These more complex pieces had only one mate and often had to be rotated a little to make the piece fit perfectly in the slot.
Love is like Perfection as everyone has a hole in the pit of their stomach that makes them feel incomplete. We turn to other people to fill this spot inside us. Most people are like the easier Perfection pieces. The empty holes inside them are larger and they are less complex. Multiple pieces/people will fit in their space. The star may fit inside the circle, but it doesn’t fill the gap completely. In these situations, the people often stay together not because they are complete, but because they feel that some cover is better than none.
Some people, (like me and perhaps you) have smaller empty spaces and are edgier (and therefore more complex). Our angles make it impossible for most pieces to fit together with us. It takes more time to size up potential matches and see if they fit perfectly. It may take longer to find the right piece and rotate to fit, but that makes it mean more than all the circle/circle matches in the world.
There it is in a nutshell, I am a pentagon in a world of circles :)
